Angels Unaware

I have made a commitment to myself to blog more often
but
am planning to take Sunday off.
It is Sunday but I was moved to write this today.
This morning,  editorialist, Cal Thomas published a piece about his brother’s death.
I was very moved by what he wrote and especially his use of this verse

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers:
for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

                                                                        Heb. 13:2

He spoke about how his parents, in 1950, had to make a decision
that would alter their life for a long time. It also altered the lives of their
entire family. His brother was born with Down Syndrome.
Cal Thomas wrote about how he, as a young boy,
gave them a recently published book by Dale Evans (wife of Roy Rogers)
which chronicled their decision to care for their Downs child.
The title of the book was Angel Unaware.
He went on to talk about how his parents could have had
a nicer car
vacations
expensive clothes
but that the decision they made caused them to make choices
in their lifestyle…for themselves…and their family.
Cal wrote about how troublesome the commitment was but that
in the end
they were happy they had done it.

I felt led to write this because I remembered reading Dale Evan’s book when I was a girl.
I also read a book about a girl with cerebral palsy, titled Karen.
I also read a book about a family that adopted 10+ kids.
I also read a book about a priest who gave his life to a leper colony.
And another one about……do you see a pattern here?

God was preparing me for something….hmmmm, what could it be?
If you’ve been following me since the beginning, you know what that is.
This column reminded me that what I am doing
is something God waited until I was 54 to bring to me.

I was given 5 strangers, remember, we had never met before
to “entertain” or give hospitality to.
They were like shadows to me.
 unknown.
a little scary
always changing shape

Am I entertaining “angels unaware”.
I don’t know.
Will I ever know?
I don’t know.
Will they remember what was done for them?
I don’t know.
But for the present, I need to believe that He is in control
not me
(heaven forbid)
or I’ll never survive.

My youngest “angel”
ready for his Steelers game

Please remember me and my family in your prayers
we need them

  1. I found your blog because of a Pinterest pin (your petticoat tree skirt!)

I’m so blessed to read about your “second” family. What an impact on 5 young lives; and on the lives of all who you touch with this blog.

  2. PLEASE, don’t spend your time to answer…
I just want to cheer you along and send you a hug!!
I needlepointed that verse with a couple of small angel figures into a long narrow “sign”, that hangs over the door in our dining room. As a church employee, and a PR person for a large company, we often entertain strangers. I love that we are able to do that and enjoy every moment. You however give a whole new meaning to the verse, and I admire you greatly!!
    Blessings to you,
    J
