Elegant Magnet Board

Today I’m going to show you the easiest magnet board EVER!
I sold these at my last Porch Sale and this is the one I have in my studio.
It’s so obvious, it doesn’t need instructions but I’ll show you what I did anyway.

Remember my motto…..never say never to a thrift store find?
Don’t worry if people think you’re nuts…stand there and think for a minute before you decide.
Can it be painted? Can parts be removed? Can it be transformed? Turn it over, sideways, upside down……
I have a marble ashtray that I use upside down as a small pedestal all the time.
My little angel from this post is sitting on it.
This tray is a good point.
It’s not a nice tray.

But it LOOKS like a nice tray….good enough for me.

Turn it over and….

Rust….but…$1.98……how can I say no? I carry a magnet in my purse so I can test the trays I find.
Not all are magnetic….depends on the base metal under the “silver” color.

I used ribbon that matched my room. Two lengths, about 1 yd is enough but more gives you a floppier, bigger bow…if you want it.

Tie each ribbon to the handle however you want, just securely enough so it doesn’t come loose and fall when the tray is hung.

Decide how long it needs to be to hang the tray the way you want, and tie a bow.

Hang it up!

Easy….elegant…cheap…..my kind of project!

Now, let’s make a magnet. I have LOTS and LOTS of old buttons….I need to sell them but just have never gotten around to it!
So, a button magnet is in order here.

Supplies. You can use hot glue but it sometimes comes apart after awhile I found. If it’s just for you, then you can fix it.
But if it’s a gift or you’re selling them, I’d use something stronger so you keep your customers happy! Use a heavy duty magnet.

OK…this is REALLY hard so watch carefully…..

Glue your first  (largest) button on….

Then the next buttons…as many as you want….let it dry….
Gosh, I may need to rest….

Here it is…

  1. I passed up two similar trays on my outing last weekend. They wanted tooooo much for them, one was $30! I do have some old button magnets above my desk here that I love. I felt so clever when I glued them.

  2. What an awesome idea! I have a few trays here that
I picked up thrifting last summer. I was going to
paint them with chalkboard paint. I never thought about
seeing if they were magnetic. I am going to try
this out. I Love this idea. Thanks for shaing!

  3. Oh, I love this idea! I keep seeing this old silver serving tray at my thrift store, now you have me thinking!

  4. What a really neat idea-love it!

  5. I have said this once, and I’ll say it again. I cannot find stuff like that here! I’m lucky to find a tray and if I do…$30 and up would be the price tag. I guess certain markets are jut tougher than others. I love your magnet board and the day I find an affordable tray, I’m making one! Great idea as always!

  6. Wow can’t beat the price and the final project! Looks great. I like the idea of carrying a magnet. I will have to do that next time I hit up the thrift stores.

  7. I love this idea! I already have a couple of silver trays that will be perfect. Thanks for sharing. Hugs, Sherry

  8. Super Cute! I love silver trays! I featured some on my tablescape this week. XO Cindy

  9. Love it all! I’m going o put a magnet in my car right now so that when I’m out thrifting I’ll have it handy along with a measuring tape.

  10. you must feel happy every time you look at that. I never considered thrift store shopping…and after reading blogs I am finding a whole new shopping world…at way better prices!! Thanks.
I am your newer follower..pls follow back if you can.

  11. I love old silver trays but have never used one as a magnet board. I guess I’ll have to start carrying some magnets in my purse!

  12. Great idea–it looks fantastic!

  13. I like the way you hung this with the ribbon. I have a silver tray myself just waiting to go up on the wall. We are just finishing the renovations to the room and then it was going up. Can I use your idea to hang mine with the ribbon too? It looks so pretty!

  14. I love tarnished old silver and never pass it up at the thrift shop either! This is such a fab idea – love it! Already a GFC follower -now a Linky follower too.
