By The Sea

What is it about the sea?
Why does it attract so?
I could sit for hours watching and listening to the ocean rush and break…..
Smelling the fresh salty air……
Is it the constancy, the reliability, the permanence?
Do we all long inside for that security?
Knowing that if we go, it will be exactly the same as it has always been?
So unlike daily life…
With it’s unexpectedness…of loss….illness….strain….sadness….

Perhaps so.
Many things can remind us of the sea, the waves, the movements…

The regularity of motion, the gracefulness…..

Rounded, curving and rolling shapes attract us….
They can be mesmerizing….as staring at the ocean can be…

Shells are often curving, rounded, shaped by the tumbling…
But all the more beautiful for their ordeal…..
Beating, tumbling, scraping…..all can shape us as well as the shells…..
Sturdy shells survive….thin shells break……
The sea is a life force to be reckoned with……never subdued or controlled…..
but experienced….
We can be emboldened by the sea or broken by it……
Feel challenged and determined or frightened and anxious…..

The sea can provide a mirror for us……
We sit and contemplate, think, evaluate, create, plan, decide……..
We transform what was…….

To something new……

Still recognizable….still the same basic shape and use…..but now changed…..

Perhaps improved……..

Living in the sunshine…..
Swimming in the sea……
Drinking the wild air……

That’s what I want to do…..

How about you?

  1. I’m finding your vignette so soothing! I love to sit and watch the ocean. Its vastness is so amazing to me, the rhythm of the waves, and yet it’s so contained. When I’m at the beach I can’t help but marvel once again at God’s incredible creation!
Thanks for stopping by and your delightful comments, Mary Alice

  4. I love the sea, too…and if I am not near IT the next best thing to me is the big water of the Great Lakes. I love the motion and ever changing color and rise and fall of the waves. It is where I am most at peace- xo Diana

  5. I’m with you, girl. I’d spend all of my time at the sea…if I weren’t a land-locked, midwest, flat-lander! Your mirror is beautiful It absolutely reminds me of the curl of the waves, lapping at the beach and leaving shells in their wake. Well done! xo
