Fall Decorating (or Not)

I need to make a serious disclaimer here…

This post is NOT about Fall decorating….it’s NOT…

I have some very dear friends out there in Bloglandia and they mean the world to me.

I worry about them.

About their projects..

About their families…

About their blogs….

About their health…..especially their mental health.

One of my friends went completely bonkers….I mean stark, staring, MAD about the FALL DECORATING that was  popping up in Bloglandia….

We had to talk her off the ledge…..where she was heaving pinecones at passersby and screaming

“IT’S AUGUST FOR GOD’S SAKE…….I AM STILL SWEATING!!!”

She’s OK now….there’s nothing a couple bottles of a nice cabernet can’t fix…..but take it from me….it was touch and go there for awhile….

So, for my dear friend…..

THIS IS NOT A POST ABOUT FALL DECORATING…

It’s a post about CONTEMPLATING getting READY for Fall decorating…..

I have these buckets of dried and drying hydrangeas all over the house….

I had to do something because I have company coming…

So I took some out to the porch and put them here….

fall-decor-1

I mean…I can’t help it that they look sort of like (whispering) Fall….right? They just dry that way…

fall-decor-3

And the basket has been hanging there empty

since I took the Spring (it’s OK to say Spring) flowers out.

I mean…what’s a girl to do when she has 3 million dried hydrangeas?

fall-decor-2

I also contemplated…CONTEMPLATED ONLY mind you….about adding more of this…..

fall-decor-8

To here….

fall-decor-5

My crazy, above the door, branch creation….

fall-decor-4

My husband ESPECIALLY loves this idea…..

There’s something in me that loves this wild and crazy look when it comes to branches….remember my Fall mantel last year?

I need to expand on the theme….to allow MORE places for birds to build nests and s&%* all over the porch of course……

Sigh…the things we do for love decorating….

fall-decor-7

To further this insanity fabulous idea….I stop along the street, not only for trash furniture but for branches as well.

The poor kids are getting FREE decorating lessons while they live here……I mean who needs college when you have me?

M: There’s one!!

Me: No…..(slowing down) it’s not “branchy” enough…

M: OK…..How about that one?

Me: No…..(slowing down) it’s a little too heavy….

Me: it’s kinda hard to explain…..

Meanwhile…while all this fall CONTEMPLATING is going on, G is fixing rotted porch balusters.

fall-decor-9

You don’t have to replace this baluster you know. Do you know how to fix rotting wood? As long as it’s not termites, I can tell you. Bondo…it’s an automotive filler. It’s a catalyst so you mix two parts together, it kicks off and then you spread it in…let it dry, sand it, paint it…….

This is the EXACT type of job G hates….so I stay out of his way.

It’s tedious and “IT’S AUGUST FOR GOD’S SAKE AND WE ARE STILL SWEATING”.

Sorry….lost my head for a minute there….

Anyway, the balusters look so nice all fixed and painted don’t they?

fall-decor-10

When I asked him (VERY GENTLY) about the paint all over the porch, he stared at me for a minute and said …

“I’m painting the porch TOO you know.”

I’ll give you the 2014 update here…..there were TOO many rotted balusters and G decided to tear everything out and replace it with that polystyrene stuff. I have to admit, it looks great. But, try the Bondo on a smaller problem…it works!

fall-decor-11

OK…OK…I just asked….

Back to Fall CONTEMPLATING for me!

One final piece of advice….if you’re thinking about doing a Fall decorating post…..

Don’t blame me if you get hit in the head with a flying pinecone…because I warned you!!

I’m just sayin’…..

  1. Hahaha! That’s hilarious, Lorraine! I LOVE your Fall decorating. That’s my kinda fall decorating. I’m not a pumpkin and witches kinda girl.

  2. Love that basket! Your porch looks awesome. I feel fall in the air and I am not ready yet. I love fall, it is my favorite time of year. I just have to wait to get back from my trip!

  3. LOVE your wonderful dried hydrangeas. I think most of us are sweating out these last few days of August, but I already have leaves turning orange on my Maples, so that’s a good enough excuse for me!!

  6. You slay me. And once again….hydrangea envy.

I can totally relate to your friend going bonkers though. Especially when I see Halloween displays in July. But I have to say the thing that pisses me off the most about fall coming is that I’m too fat for all my cute jeans and I only have limited time to do something about that.

(wait a sec while I finish my brownie.)

    Okay. Happy Friday!

  7. Haha, I am still laughing, I had a gut laugh over this post.

And, well, I gotta kinda lean her way – though I kept all my pinecones for autumn decorating, bwuahaha – no “chucking” them here. BUT she has a point. It’s hotter than, um, well, summertime out there still and I am not NOT decorating for fall till it cools down.

LOVE your dried hydrangeas – perfect (and safe) bridge to the other side of summer.

It’s awesome – and so it your porch fixits. YAY!

  8. Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha…… smiled at this post, pretty funny. And by the way, the basket looks awesome. I won’t say the *F* word, even though I could use a few pinecones.

  9. Enjoyed your post ….I have been contemplating all things “Fall”. Thanks for giving us a humorous look at decorating for the season! Or should I say contemplating decorating for the season. 😉

  10. Ha ha!! I must say, when I first saw pumpkins popping up on blogs a few weeks ago, I felt like throwing pine cones, too! Come on, my morning glories just started blooming! I’m not ready for Jack Frost to make his appearance just yet. That being said, your dried hydrangeas are perfectly acceptable since that’s what Mother Nature is doing to the ones that are planted in the sunny areas of my yard. I must find myself a cone shaped basket like yours. Love it!

  12. Great post, it gave me a good giggle. I have to admit though I am ready for F..L. I can’t help it, it’s my favorite time of year. I am not a summer girl. When we start our new home, via my blog, I will get to the point where I will be picking out plants and hydrangeas are one that I want to plant. I love them. Your F..L basket looks very pretty!!!

hahaha – Love this post. I love fall, and I’m slowly starting to think about it. But it’s too darn hot to do more than just think longingly about cooler weather and leaves changing colors.

  17. Great contemplating. I love anything with fall branches and I pick them up around the neighborhood too. That basket is fabulous especially with your dried hydrangeas.

  18. LOL! I don’t know if I’d go as far as going on a ledge and flinging pinecones, Lorraine, but it is definitely too hot here for me to even think of putting Fall out. For one thing, I would have to go up to the attic to get the boxes/bins of Fall stuff and if it feels like 90 on the ground floor I can only imagine how hot it’s going to be up in the attic. Love the hydrangeas in the basket though. I think mine dried too fast on the bush in the heat, but I’ll have to see if I have any salvageable blooms. I do love the way they look dried.

  19. Very entertaining post! We’re still sweating like mad here as well so fall hasn’t really sunk in. Course, come to think of it, in South Texas, we may not really get fall til November! I guess I don’t have to worry about anyone flinging pine cones at me, anyway! Have a great holiday weekend!~~Angela

  20. I had my laugh for the day! Wonderful post… and very true!!! I was photographing the hydrangeas around my house for a post today and it was 92 degrees and I was sweating buckets. Inside I have 3 fall project going… so I turned my AC down to 65 and turned on all of my fans to get in the mood… I’m not kidding!!!!
Feel free to throw pinecones my way… I need them for the Christmas decoration I’m starting in a couple of weeks!
I can’t leave here without drooling over our hydrangeas in that fabulous basket! They do look very fallish!
    So funny!!!!

  21. Hahahahahaha!!! LUV this post! Still giggling and looking around for flying pinecones as I type this. Been wanting to do some pre Fall decor and have nor been feeling it because of the heat … 🙂 I too have 300ish dried hydrangea heads all over the home and have been fluffing them up here and here. Such a luvly basket you have there.
Going back for more inspiration and giggles.

  22. Cute post. I was just thinking how blog land has become like the stores. Soon they will be decorating for fall in June. Just sayin.

  23. I laughed out loud at your friends reaction. Mine is similar but I thought it was just because I live in Phoenix and it was 110 today. 🙂

Love the painted table and the hydrangeas are the perfect non fall touch. 🙂

  24. Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles?

I mean, what you say is fundamental and all. But think about if you added some great images or video clips to give your posts
more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and video clips, this site could definitely
be one of the very best in its niche. Very good blog!
