French Enamel Milk Paint Project

I’ve had this vintage hoosier cabinet for a couple years now. I’ve tried to sell it at two porch sales….no go.
Had it on the front porch for awhile while it was on Craigslist…..no go.

Finally, it ended up in the garage for awhile…in the way.

I thought about using it in the laundry room but it really didn’t have the space to hold a laundry basket or anything…..sigh…
It was too bulky to haul all the way to Williamsburg to the shop…..

I thought it was pretty cute with the drop down porcelain enamel work surface and all…

I envisioned it as a nice craft cabinet for those with small spaces. That porcelain top would make a great work surface!
It even has the original flour sifter and breadbox!

But….obviously my vision wasn’t alive in anyone else’s mind…..

Time on the porch did more damage to the bottom doors which were already pretty worn when I bought it…

Thank goodness I secured a new shop space close to home.

We dragged it out of the garage and I tried to decide how to tackle it…

I removed the doors and finally decided it wasn’t worth trying to save them….oh, I saved them…but you know what I mean…just as a base for another project!

I decided that the MMS French Enamel matched the blue edge on the porcelain top the best so I chose that.

I already have a small wall hutch done in that and I really wanted to use another color to show off the paint but this was the best choice…..

I did a chippy finish on it…you can read how here

And now the old girl has a new life as a display cabinet…..
I left the doors off and will either find a couple baskets to put in there or maybe a vintage looking curtain across the open space…
One of you must know how to take a better picture in flourescent light….
let me know!

Some of you have asked how the shop is doing and things are going
VERY well so far!
This past weekend I sold two pieces of furniture, a large mirror
and quite a bit of Milk Paint!

YAY!!

  9. Well, now that you have a fabulous display piece for your milk paints, it surely will sell. I think it’s the perfect primitive piece and will take just the right person to snatch it up.

  10. Yay! So glad the store is going well. Love the color and the milk paint looks beautiful inside 🙂

  11. Great idea – it is perfect for a display cabinet! Do you happen to know what kind of paint was on it (lead, oil, etc)? I going to have to paint my hoosier cabinet this year and I’m curious how the milk paint will do over different kinds of paint.
