Spring Chalkboard Reveal

In between working on two pieces of furniture for clients this weekend…
I worked on this gorgeous carved piece I snagged at an antique shop…

You can see closeups here….

I KNEW I wanted to make a chalkboard and thought the perfect spot for it would be in the foyer over this pretty sideboard.

Even though I love the even application I get from spray paint, the amount of carving meant I had to brush a chalkboard paint on…
I gave it a light sanding first because all the old varnish was really flaking off.
I used a small round brush along all the carved edges…

And then a large surface brush overall.
If you don’t like the brush strokes you get with brushing chalkboard paint, I would recommend not using a general paintbrush but an artist brush instead. The bristles are finer and the application will come out smoother.

I applied three coats. Finally, I sanded it lightly with 600 grit paper dipped in water so the finish was smooth.

I think the longest part of the whole process was finding some good chalkboard pics so I could copy the style….

And then drawing the board…..

But I’m so happy with how it turned out!

Some things are just worth waiting for…..
